Announcing Our First Fiction Class!
Calling all memoir writers and journalists who want to figure out how to break into fiction.
At Narratively, we’re all about nonfiction. Ever since we launched Narratively.com way back in 2012, we’ve focused on scouring the world for original, true stories. And when we launched Narratively Academy last year we focused primarily on nonfiction classes. We’re not moving away from that focus, but we also know that storytellers don’t like to put themselves in boxes. A lot of the same skills you use in journalism and memoir writing apply to fiction writing too. In fact, I’d argue it’s essential for journalists and memoir writers to dabble in fiction, even if just to flex that creative muscle. That’s why we’re thrilled to announce our first-ever dedicated fiction class is coming up in just a few weeks.
If you’re a journalist, essayist or memoirist who had dabbled in fiction writing or just thought about it a lot, this one’s for you. Instructor Rafael Frumkin is a marvelous writer who has penned essays, criticism and journalism in The New York Times, Granta, Washington Post, the Believer and elsewhere—and has published three very notable fiction books, including New York Times Editor’s Pick Confidence and the short story collection Bugsy, which was longlisted for the 2024 Story Prize.
On Tuesday, November 18, Rafael will be teaching a 3-hour seminar on Making the Jump from Nonfiction to Fiction. Registration is open now and is limited to just 15 students—I have a feeling this one is going to fill up quickly!

Thanks, Brendan! Looking forward to teaching this :)
