Part of what makes a story powerful is the marriage of emotion and image. This goes beyond âshow, donât tellââitâs how your visual choices lend that extra oomph to a description that make your story relatableâand unforgettable.
Grief could be represented by black clothing. But how does it feel to represent it with an empty chair beside you, anywhere you sit down, for months? A joyful scene could be described with bright colors. But you could feel the giddiness more if you pictured how fast your dog wagged her tail when you found her long-lost ball under the couch.
Led by fiction writer, poet, essayist and scriptwriter Celeste Ramos, this workshop introduces three effective exercises to help make your writing more visceral and emotionally engaging:
mindfulness to deepen your ability to notice objects and details;
memory recall to help you remember the finer details of an environment during an emotionally charged situation; and
âsensory remixingâ to create unique sensory associations.
These methods will improve how economical you are with visuals and setting, leaving your reader immersed in the tale long after itâs over. Donât just make them feel somethingâgive them a tattoo.
This seminar is right for you if:
Youâre a memoirist, essayist or fiction writer who wants to craft evocative prose.
