Writers who are new to fiction usually start with short stories, but this classic form is not as simple as it may appear. Every word matters in the short story. Every narrative choice is more visible and impactful than in longer forms. Great short stories come from intentionality when formulating structure, point of view, narrative distance, and characterization.
Bestselling fiction writer Heidi Pitlor was the longtime series editor of the perennial bestseller, The Best American Short Stories, for two decades, and she has worked with many of the most well-known names in contemporary fiction. In this intimate three-hour seminar, Heidi will offer a rare look inside a beloved American genre, guiding writers in exploring how to make informed decisions in order to write stories that ultimately engage, transport and move readers.
Through discussion, examining samples of successful short stories, and Q&A, Heidi will help students understand the foundational elements of short story writing and cultivate their own individual processes, as well as come to more fully own their own voices on the page. Heidi will discuss what she and her guest editors looked for during her eighteen years at the helm of The Best American Short Stories, and what all writers can learn from this.
