Any writer knows that if you plan to work on a book — even if you’re just thinking about it — at some point the matter of whether to get an agent or not (or at least to try!) will come up. As much as you may want to put it off. 😉 There can be so much hullabaloo around it: How many agents will you need to get in touch with before securing one? What do you need to have completed before you reach out to begin with? And, like dating, the ever-looming question of, Is there even someone out there who is a good match for me?
Of course, some writers forego the whole agent-querying process altogether. With that in mind, we spoke to authors Bonnie Chau and Kristi D. Osorio about their experiences doing just that. We asked them about why they decided to submit without agents to begin with, how they got book deals on their own, whether they would do it differently again and more.
