This Week: a Little Business, a Little Magic
Join us for two different Open Book live chats this week—one about blending magical realism with memoir, and one on finding balance in the business of writing.
Happy Presidents’ Day to everyone who cares about where to correctly place the apostrophe in “Presidents’ Day!” We’re celebrating with not one but two Open Book live videos this week.
First up, this Tuesday at 1pm ET, the wonderful Jasper "Jaz" Joyner will be joining me to chat about How to Blend Magical Realism + Memoir. Jaz is the author of the Richard Wright Literary Award-winning work, Pansy: A Black American Memoir, and starting next week will be teaching a 6-week workshop class with us on How to Write a Memoir with Magical Realism. If you’ve been thinking about taking that one (or just want to know what the heck it means to blend magical realism into your memoir!) I hope you’ll join us on Tuesday.
This one will be held on Substack Live. Click here to add to your calendar and to join us live on Tuesday at 1pm.
Then on Thursday at 1pm ET, the incredible Lee Gutkind is back to host a conversation with one of the leading experts and advocates for writers in the book publishing business: Jane Friedman. Since 2015, Jane’s newsletter The Bottom Line—which has been called something like The Economist for people in publishing—has provided nuanced market intelligence to thousands of authors. Jane’s book, “The Business of Being a Writer,” expands on that mission. Lee will chat with Jane about the state of the publishing industry and how writers can find the right balance of focusing on writing and focusing on business.
This one will be live on Zoom. Click here to add to your calendar and join us on Thursday at 1pm ET.
PS: Make sure you never miss an Open Book by adding this entire series to your calendar.
