Join Us This Week: The Wild World of Travel Writing
Curious about how to break into this enviable beat? This Thursday, I'll be chatting with a longtime veteran of the genre.
Hello, writers! We have a lot coming up at Narratively Academy this week.
This Thursday is a brand-new class, How to Plot with master screenwriter Bill Gullo. There are just two seats left in that seminar, so if you’ve been thinking about joining, be sure to grab a spot now.
Also this Thursday, we have a very special Open Book live video I’m particularly excited about. Some of you know in that one of my previous, pre-Narratively lives, I wrote travel articles for The New York Times, The Washington Post and many other publications. Travel writing is a complicated field that’s sometimes a lot less fun than you’d think…and sometimes even more fun!
Thomas Swick spent 19 years as the travel editor of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. His own writing has been published in Afar, Smithsonian, Oxford American, Missouri Review, Ploughshares and many other publications, and has been selected to appear in various anthologies, including six (!) editions of The Best American Travel Writing. He is also the author of four books, including The Joys of Travel: And Stories That Illuminate Them and his recent memoir, Falling into Place: A Story of Love, Poland, and the Making of a Travel Writer, which includes a forward from master travel writer Pico Iyer.
I can’t wait to talk to Thomas about how he got started in travel writing, his long and illustrious career, the state of the industry today, his recent book and, of course, any questions you have about all of this and more.
Please join us this Thursday, December 11, at 1 p.m. ET on Substack Live.
